Dr Elroy Goliath (5th Dan) was born in Paarl, Western Cape - South Africa. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch and an MBA (cum laude) from the University of Stellenbosch Business School. He started his Aikido journey more than 20 years ago in Cape Town, South Africa.

He continued studying under many well regarded instructors here and internationally, including Sensei’s Bruce Alleman, Josh Nieuhaus, Matthew Holland, Giorgio Veneri (the late), Christian Tissier, Kazuo Chiba, Yoshimitsu Yamada, Masatake Fujita, Minoru Kanetsuka, Nobuyoshi Tamura, Katsuaki Asai and Hiroshi Tada Sensei. He has also trained at the Aikido Head Quarters in Tokyo, Japan and he took part in the Aikido World Games in Duisburg, Germany 2005.

Goliath Sensei obtained his Shodan in 2000 and his Nidan in 2002 in South Africa under the late Giorgio Veneri sensei. He received his Sandan (3° Dan) and Yondan (4° Dan) from his teacher Shihan Yoji Fujimoto (8° Dan), after taking the Yudansha examinations in Laces, Northern Italy. Since 1999 he only studied with and followed Fujimoto Shihan, and has attended various local and international seminars with him after they met in South Africa through Giorgio Veneri Sensei.

He is the founder and Chief Instructor of AIKIDO SOUTH AFRICA®, a national Aikikai Aikido organisation authorised by the Aikido Headquarters in Tokyo for the teaching of aikido in South Africa - established under the guidance of then Technical Director, Shihan Yoji Fujimoto (8° Dan).

Although Fujimoto Shihan sadly passed away on 20 Feb 2012, his legacy, unmistakeable aikido style and and strict technical requirements were transferred to his resident student in South Africa, Sensei Elroy Goliath (4th Dan and Chief Instructor of ASA) who studied under Fujimoto Shihan for many years (both in South Africa and abroad). He received his 5th Dan directly from the Aikido Doshu at the 2018 Kagamibiraki Ceremony hosted at the Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan on 14 January'18.

Elroy Goliath Sensei continues to uphold a unique standard of aikido in South Africa (to be expected as he received instruction directly from the Master) - visit an ASA dojo in any of the provinces we are represented and decide for yourself. Should you have specific question in this regard, please contact Sensei Elroy Goliath directly.
