What is Aikido?

Aikido is not a sport and very different from any martial art you might know. It helps children learn to deal with difficult situations in a non-violent manner. They are taught not to clash or become tense when they encounter conflict, but to relax and redirect the negative situation. This process builds good social and communicative skills. It teaches body awareness, sensitivity to movement and coordination. Aikido training develops self-confidence and a positive self-image. It teaches practical everyday skills that will help them stay clearheaded and focused at school, during sports, and while interacting in social/emotional situations.

Typical queston I am always asked by prospective Aikido students: Is Aikido for me? Will I be able to do the techniques? Will it work against an attack to help me out of a sticky situation? Should I not try the more familiar styles like Karate, Judo, TKD etc

It's here!!

The official AIKIDO SOUTH AFRICA® DVD production is now available on this website. The DVD was recently leaked (accidently) to YouTube with very positive interest! Following the introduction of the DVD to the ASA Gauteng and Limpopo dojo’s at last weekend’s AIKIDO SOUTH AFRICA® Gauteng seminar, this 9 minute DVD will now be released in 2 phases.

Different international organisations, aikido students both locally and abroad, as well as The Hombu have been over time asking me to describe in more detail my journey with Yoji Fujimoto Shihan - arguably one of the most talented Aikikai Shihan that ever lived. This relationship lead to a new expansion of South African aikido and ultimately the establishment of AIKIDO SOUTH AFRICA® (NPC).

Sensei Elroy Goliath was honoured recently by receiving the Yondan (4th Dan) certificate directly from the hand of Hayato Osawa Shihan (7th Dan) during his seminar in Milan, Italy (4-5 Feb 2012). Osawa Shihan is responsible for upholding the integrity of aikido at Hombu dojo and personally responsible for directly assisting the current Doshu (and previous) in the execution of his tasks. This ceremony follows his successful international 4th Dan examination with Fujimoto Shihan in Europe during July 2011 (read more about Sensei Elroy Goliath 's 4th Dan examination in Europe).
